Dr. Akpoghelie, Patrick Othuke

Profile

Patrick Othuke Akpoghelie was born in Lagos in Western Nigeria. He is a Distinguished Lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology at Delta State University of Science and Technology (Now Southern Delta University (SDU)), Ozoro, Nigeria. He specializes in the areas of food/industrial microbiology, food biopolymers, food chemistry, probiotics and fermentation technology, food formulation for infants and nutrition. Akpoghelie received his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology (2012), Master’s degree in Food & Industrial Microbiology (2017) and Ph.D. in Food & Industrial Microbiology (2021) all from the University of Benin (Nigeria). Akpoghelie is the co-author of book chapters in “Exploring the intersection of fungal products and human immunology: Fungal Macromolecule Applications in Life Sciences” (2025) and of “The Phytochemistry and Pharmacology of Bidens alba: The Genus Bidens (2025)”. In addition, he has published over 94 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals with over 1,600 citations (H-index of 24 on Google Scholar and H-index of 21 on SCOPUS). Dr. Akpoghelie received a letter from the Faculty of Science, Southern Delta University in recognition of his scientific achievements especially as the 273rd best scientist out of the top 500 scientists in Nigeria by Elsevier (SCOPUS) in 2025. Dr. Akpoghelie is a professional member of the Nigerian Institute of Food Scientist and Technology (NIFST), Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM), and a global outreach member of the American Society for Microbiology. His research has not received any grants thus far. He is an editorial member of International Journal of Food Science & Biotechnology (IJFSB) and a reviewer for several journals indexed in SCOPUS. Dr. Akpoghelie is currently the second (2nd) best scientist/researcher at Delta State University of Science and Technology (Now Southern Delta University (SDU)), Ozoro, Nigeria. He has organized numerous seminars and workshops for staff and students during his time as Acting Head of Department of Food Science and Technology at SDU from 2022 to 2024. In 2025, He served as facilitator for academic seminar and workshop at Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), Agbarha-Otor, Nigeria in training academic staff on effective research writing and publication in high impact journals.
